NovelCult uses per-novel monthly subscriptions. Readers subscribe to a tier for one novel and receive early access to a moving window of advance chapters before those chapters become free.
How monetization works
NovelCult's reader monetization system currently uses Stripe:
- Stripe Checkout collects reader subscription payments.
- Stripe Connect Express handles author onboarding and payouts.
- Stripe Billing Portal performs the exact billing action NovelCult displays for the current subscription. Depending on launch and subscription state, that may be full management, period-end cancellation, payment-method recovery, or no self-service action.
- NovelCult stores the subscription, payment, transfer, and webhook records needed to operate access, support, accounting, and fraud review.
- NovelCult does not store readers' full card details.
A subscription applies to one novel. It does not unlock paid early access across the entire NovelCult catalog.
Author and reader responsibilities
An author can:
- Connect a Stripe account and complete required verification.
- Create up to ten current subscription tiers for a novel; disabled current tiers still count toward the limit.
- Set tier prices, advance-chapter counts, and tier benefits.
- Enable or disable monetization for an eligible novel.
- Publish advance chapters.
- Review subscribers, earnings, transfers, promotion codes, and tier badges where those tools are available.
A reader can:
- View a novel's available tiers and benefits.
- Start Stripe Checkout.
- Receive access after NovelCult confirms the subscription.
- View current subscriptions.
- Change eligible plans, manage billing, cancel, or resume through Stripe's supported flows.
Author eligibility
Monetization cannot be enabled until every applicable requirement is satisfied.
Stripe account requirement
The author needs an active Stripe account that supports NovelCult's current transfer flow. An account is not eligible while onboarding or required information is incomplete, or while the account is restricted, disabled, or missing required data.
At least one active tier
The novel needs at least one current, active subscription tier. An empty tier configuration is rejected.
Minimum free content
The novel must have either:
- at least 15 published free chapters; or
- at least 40,000 published free words.
Only chapters that are published, free, active, and not permanently deleted count toward this requirement.
No retroactive restrictions
When monetization is first enabled, a chapter that was already published for free before the novel's first monetization date cannot later be converted into an advance chapter.
That protection remains in place if the author disables monetization, re-enables it later, or changes tiers. It prevents readers from unexpectedly losing access to chapters they previously received for free.
A draft created before the cutoff is different: it may become an advance chapter when it is first published in a monetized novel because it was never previously public.
Tier rules
Each novel supports a maximum of ten current tiers. Disabled current tiers still consume a slot, while historical Stripe price versions do not count as additional tiers. A tier includes:
- Name: up to 30 characters.
- Price: a USD amount from $3.00 through $1,000.00 inclusive, in whole cents (for example $3.01 or $10.50).
- Chapters ahead: an integer of at least one.
- Billing period: currently defaults to 30 days.
- Perks: a list of accurate benefit descriptions.
- Recommended: only one tier should be marked recommended.
- Active: controls whether new readers can purchase the tier.
Tier ordering
Tiers must be internally consistent:
- the first tier must grant at least one chapter ahead;
- each later chapters-ahead value must stay the same or increase;
- prices must be strictly higher than the preceding tier's price;
- tier names must be unique;
- update requests must include existing tiers;
- slots are immutable and append-only: new tiers are added after the existing catalog and cannot be inserted, reordered, deleted, or reused; and
- a tier should be disabled instead of removed when existing subscribers depend on it.
For example:
- Reader: $3 for 3 chapters ahead.
- Patron: $6 for 7 chapters ahead.
- Champion: $9 for 15 chapters ahead.
This sequence is valid because both the price and the advance window increase from one tier to the next. A later tier may instead use the same chapter window when its price is higher; it remains an ordinary tier and its benefits are presented cumulatively as everything in the preceding author tier, with any additional perks. In the reader paywall, the preceding reader-visible tier is used because disabled tiers are omitted. Authors are responsible for making each tier's promise clear and sustainable.
NovelCult does not offer a support-only tier type or custom reader-entered amounts. Every plan is an author-defined tier in the novel's catalog.
Price changes and versioning
Changing a tier's price creates a new Stripe Price. Existing subscribers remain on their original price unless they change plans. New subscribers use the current price.
Price changes are not retroactive. Treat each price version as part of the permanent billing history.
Disabling a tier
Disabling a tier:
- hides it from new readers;
- prevents new Checkout Sessions for that tier;
- does not immediately revoke existing paid access; and
- preserves existing subscribers' current subscription and access until it changes or ends.
Advance chapters
An advance chapter is a published chapter that is temporarily available only to qualifying subscribers.
For access and tier-fulfilment calculations, the chapter must be published, active, and not permanently deleted. Draft or scheduled chapters are not readable.
When an eligible novel has monetization enabled, a newly published chapter can enter the advance window. Free chapters are never moved back behind the paid window.
Tier visibility and fulfilment
A tier is not shown to new readers until the novel has enough published advance chapters to fulfil its promise.
For example, if a tier promises 10 chapters ahead but the novel has only 6 eligible advance chapters, that tier is not sellable. It becomes available once at least 10 eligible advance chapters exist.
This protects readers from buying a tier that cannot currently deliver the advertised benefit.
Sliding-window access
Tiers do not permanently unlock a fixed list of chapters. They grant access to a moving window.
Suppose chapter 100 is the latest free chapter and a subscriber's tier grants 10 chapters ahead. The subscriber can read chapters 101 through 110 while they are in the active advance window. As the author publishes more chapters, the window moves forward and older advance chapters become free for everyone.
Important rules:
- free chapters are never locked;
- unpublished chapters are not readable;
- anonymous readers cannot use a paid advance window;
- active subscribers can read chapters inside the window provided by their tier; and
- disabling a tier or novel does not automatically revoke already-paid access immediately.
Plan changes and cancellation
Cancellation
Cancellation is handled through Stripe Billing Portal. When cancellation is scheduled for the end of the current billing period:
- the reader keeps access until the period ends;
- the subscription is displayed as canceling; and
- the next renewal is stopped.
Cancellation does not automatically refund a completed charge. Readers should review the refund and dispute policy.
Reactivation
A reader may resume a subscription through Stripe only while it remains eligible and NovelCult displays a management action that includes reactivation. Reactivation is unavailable during a commercial pause or rollback. If the subscription has already ended, the reader may need to start a new subscription after purchases reopen.
Plan changes
Plan changes are limited to tiers belonging to the same novel. A reader must not be moved to a tier for another novel or author.
Plan direction is determined by price: a higher-priced target is an upgrade even when its chapter window is unchanged, while a lower-priced target is a downgrade. Entitlement remains threshold-based: access uses the effective stored chapters-ahead window, not the plan price.
A pending downgrade can keep the current tier active until the displayed effective date. NovelCult renders controls from the backend capability: Manage Billing and Change Plan after launch, Cancel Subscription for a healthy subscription during a commercial pause, Update Payment Method for a past-due subscription, or support-only guidance when self-service is unavailable.
Disabling monetization
An author may stop accepting new subscriptions for a novel. New purchase options then disappear, while existing subscriptions are generally scheduled to end at the current billing period. Existing readers may retain access through the period they already paid for.
Disabling monetization does not erase payment, subscription, transfer, or dispute records that NovelCult must retain for support, accounting, fraud prevention, or legal compliance.
Support and payment safety
For onboarding, tier, access, payout, or billing questions, use the official channel listed on . Include the novel, tier, approximate time, and a Stripe receipt, invoice, or payment reference where relevant.
Never send a full card number, card security code, Stripe secret key, password, or authentication token.
