SideKick | Shit Hero

Working is hard. Being a hero too. Doing both at the same time, for half the pay, is hell. Every day, Arthur wakes up early to sweep the filthy streets of Lumière in exchange for a pittance, zero recognition, and a terrible smell that seeps through his clothes and clings to his body. But when monsters appear and the city needs someone, he’s the one who steps up. Not to defeat them, of course, but because, apparently, no one else wants to clean up the mess that the real heroes leave behind. At the end of the day, his only consolation is heading to the corner diner, where the most beautiful girl he’s ever seen works. There, between a hot sandwich and a shy smile, Arthur almost forgets that he’s the lowest-paid (and most ridiculous) hero in Lumière. What kind of shit hero is this? A.N.: A short story set in the cyberpunk heroes universe of higgscrowl (Radiant).

Star Chronicles: Embers Of The Calamity

Let Power Be Your Truth. Your Light. And Your Chains. That was the first law granted to the Nyxvalis clan. For thirty-eight generations it held. Through fire and blood, through empire and ruin, through centuries of war waged in the name of a bloodline that had long since ceased to be merely human. It held — and in holding, built a monolith so absolute that the world stopped asking whether it could fall. Then came the 39th Flame. Seven hundred and thirty-one entered the Chambers of Night. Forty-seven crawled back out. Not an army. Not a dynasty. An ember — dim, diminished, and already encircled by enemies who had spent years sharpening their finest wolves in anticipation of its arrival. A heresy in numbers alone. A silent warning to those still bold enough to hear it: If a monolith can tremble — so too can it fall. As the world prepares to record the embers in its annals, so must its instruments play their parts. Those duty-bound to hold the monolith in place. Those eager to test the might of a millennium of power. And the forty-seven — carrying a smiling ember within. A dark gothic world of political deceit and ancient bloodlines. Empires built on inherited violence. Power forged in law and broken in shadow. And beneath it all — the slow, certain rot of institutions that have never once been held accountable. This is the world of The Star Chronicles. A story about survival without innocence. Legacy worn like chains. And the particular kind of power that doesn't free you — it simply decides how you burn. The Sun is dying, and there's no saving this world. Engineering grad student Gavin Daniels volunteers for experimental brain emulation technology--humanity's last chance to gain centuries of research time while only days pass on Earth. But the untested cradle connects him to something ancient: a galaxy-spanning competition called the Ascendancy, where Earth's survival is the prize. The rules are brutal. Lose, and everything is forfeit. In a genre built on solo heroes grinding for power, Gavin and Earth's champions choose a different path: reincarnating the souls of Earth's dead as spirit-born warriors, building armies instead of going it alone, forging alliances with alien species, and refusing to treat war as a game. But those overseeing the Ascendancy aren't safeguarding peace--they're filtering threats. Culling potential rivals before they can rise. Can Earth's champions survive alien dinosaurs, and a universe that seems to want to crush them? Our only allies, a race that died on Earth before humanity ever took its first steps...
