As the title implies, I'm interested in the ways in which cliffhangers add to or detract from a story. More often than not, authors use cliffhangers to create suspense and leave the readers wanting more. This is created by an extensive build-up and a highly-climactic scene. What I want to question is the effectiveness of this device and how often should any story in general utilise this. Essentially, I want to understand the common consensus on cliffhangers.

As a side note, after reading Universe Online, I'm tempted to start writing my own fiction. I've been exploring several plot devices and writing techniques to supplement my writing. This is just another part of my exploration. I would elaborate more on the idea I have now if any of you are interested.
