If you enjoy fantasy novels, there is something special about following a series while it is still being written. New chapters keep uploading, characters continue to develop, and you get to experience major parts of the story.
The exciting part is finding the right place to discover ongoing fantasy novels. There are many platforms which have ongoing fantasy, progression fantasy, LitRPG, cultivation, and other genres. Here are some of the places worth checking.
1. NovelCult
NovelCult is a useful starting point if you want to follow fantasy stories that are still being updated. It has a dedicated ongoing section where readers can find stories that are actively uploading new chapters. The platform also has a separate fantasy category and allows readers to browse by popularity, rating, views, latest updates, number of chapters, and other discovery options.
You can find different kinds of fantasy, including fantasy adventure, progression fantasy, LitRPG, cultivation, portal fantasy, dark fantasy, action fantasy, and fantasy romance. The ongoing section is particularly useful when you want to find stories that are still unfolding rather than already finished.
Why use NovelCult?
NovelCult is built around web fiction, so readers can follow ongoing stories chapter by chapter while discovering new authors and series. The platform also has an Explore section where you can combine discovery with filters and sorting instead of relying only on the most popular novels.
2. Royal Road
Royal Road is another strong option for readers interested in fantasy webnovels. Royal Road has a dedicated list of ongoing fantasy fiction, along with filters for different types of stories. Its catalog includes progression fantasy, cultivation, LitRPG, portal fantasy, high fantasy, kingdom building, and other fantasy subgenres. For example, its current fantasy listings include stories with hundreds of chapters as well as newer series that are still building their readership.
You can also use its Latest Updates section when you want to see stories that have recently uploaded new chapters. It is best for readers who enjoy long-running fantasy and progression-focused web novels.
3. Scribble Hub
Scribble Hub is another place to look for ongoing web fiction. Its fantasy directory provides filters for Ongoing, Completed, and Hiatus stories. You can also sort stories using factors such as chapters, chapters per week, date added, favorites, last update, ratings, readers, reviews, and word count.
That makes it useful when you're looking for a specific type of ongoing series. For example, you might want to find a recently published fantasy novel, a story updating a certain number of times a week, a long-running series, a LitRPG fantasy or a fantasy story with a combination of other genres.
The ability to look at chapters per week can also help if you prefer stories with frequent updates. It is best for readers who like detailed filtering and a large variety of independent web fiction.
4. Search by Fantasy Subgenre
You don't always have to search for "fantasy novels." Fantasy is a huge category, and narrowing your search can make it much easier to find something you'll actually enjoy.
If you enjoy watching characters slowly become stronger, look for progression fantasy. These stories often focus on training, power systems, new abilities, ranks and stages, stronger enemies, character development and LitRPG.
For readers who enjoy game-inspired mechanics, search for LitRPG. Common elements include levels, skills, classes, stats, quests, experience points, inventories, and system notifications etc.
Cultivation fantasy often revolves around characters attempting to increase their power and reach increasingly higher realms. You may find stories involving sects, martial arts, spiritual energy, cultivation realms, dao concepts, immortality, and eastern techniques.
If you prefer stories where characters enter another world, portal fantasy and isekai are useful search terms. NovelCult, for example, has a dedicated portal-fantasy collection that includes stories combining fantasy, adventure, LitRPG, cultivation, and other elements. NovelCult
5. Use ‘Latest Updates’ section when you want active stories
If your priority is finding a story that is being updated, don't rely only on popularity rankings. Look for a platform's latest-update section.
NovelCult's ongoing section similarly focuses on stories that are still unfolding and receiving updates. NovelCult
Royal Road, for example, has a fantasy-specific latest-updates page showing recently updated ongoing stories and their latest chapters. Royal Road
This can be useful for discovering newer stories before they become ranked.
6. Check the update pattern before starting
An ongoing series is different from a completed novel. Before committing to one, check when the author last updated it. A story with hundreds of chapters but no recent activity may provide a different experience from a newer series uploading many chapters every week.
Things worth checking are latest chapter date, total chapters, update frequency, status, word count, and author activity. Some platforms make this information easy to see alongside the story listing.
For example, Scribble Hub displays chapter counts, chapters per week, and last-update information in its fantasy listings. Scribble Hub
7. Decide whether you want a large ongoing novel or a new novel
There are two different ways to enjoy ongoing fantasy.
- Start a long-running novel:
If you don't like waiting for chapters, choose a novel that already has many chapters. You might have hundreds of chapters available before catching up with the author.
- Start a newer novel
If you enjoy discovering stories early, look for newer releases. You may have fewer chapters to read, but you get to follow the story from its early stages and become part of its initial reader community.
Any approach is better. It depends on whether you prefer binge-reading or following a story as it develops.
